The Lesser Antilles are a group of small islands located in the eastern Caribbean Sea, beginning from eastern Puerto Rico to the eastern coast of Venezuela.
The climate is typical tropical warm refreshing thanks to the Trade Winds, so the eastern section of the islands is usually cooler and more humid. The temperature of 27°C is almost constant throughout the year although in the interior of the islands it can be warmer and it only gets cooler with altitude in the mountains. The climate is differentiated into two seasons: the dry and cooler at the beginning of the year and the hotter humidity in the second half. The average annual rainfall is 1650 mm/year.
They are found on the outer edge of the Caribbean Plate, where many of the islands are the result of subduction as the Atlantic Plate slides under the Caribbean Plate. The islands are the section that emerges to the sea surface of a submarine mountain range that is divided into several branches. The western and southern sector of the Lesser Antilles is of volcanic origin with seismic and volcanic activity in some of the islands such as Martinique (Mont Peleé) and Saint Vincent (Soufriere). The relief of the islands is usually high and abrupt with some of the elevations up to 1200 meters above sea level in some of the islands such as Anguilla, Antigua, Barbuda and Barbados. The rivers are short and fast with abundant coastal lagoons and mangroves.
The vegetation of the eastern section of the islands is of the tropical type with dense forests. In the driest areas and with more limestone soils, it is Herbaceous or Xerophytic Savannahs. The fauna is very varied, especially birds, reptiles and insects. Fishing is abundant in the waters of the Caribbean Sea.
The first settlers of the Lesser Antilles were the Sibone who populated the islands around the year 2000 BC. Around the year 0 AD the islands were occupied by the Arawack from South America. Later, in the year 1000 AD, the Caribbean arrived, also from South America, who, due to their aggressiveness, displaced the Arawack. For the year 1492 the islands were discovered by the Spanish who annihilated in one way or another the indigenous populations which throughout the colonization mixed with the black slaves and these are the only survivors in some of the islands where they still preserve their language and traditions. Once the treasures of Mexico and Peru were discovered, the Antilles lost interest, and San Juan de Puerto Rico and Havana were used as supply centers for the commercial fleet between America and Europe. These routes attracted pirates and smugglers to the Caribbean Sea who established their fortified bases in the Lesser Antilles. The Spanish decline of the 17th century favored the colonial penetration of England, France, Holland and Denmark in the Antilles. The independence of the Antilles began in 1804 in Haiti and continued from the 19th century to the present day.
